A Ship called Liberty

Writer: Stephen McNamaraStephen McNamara

"You can’t sail a ship in two directions no matter how hard you try" - Scottish Libertarian Party's Constitutional Committee

Funnily enough, that's about the most truthful statement in their entire statement. They also state that "An old adage runs 'don’t give anyone any extra rope to hang you with' – and so the following partial disclosure of only some of the things Stephen did that led to his expulsion will likely not cease the wheels of the rumour mill from spinning. It is more than likely that anything said will merely be picked apart by those who want to believe it was us, the Constitutional Committee, who were the ones deficient during this episode."

Well they're right here too. Don't give me the rope to hang them with, then they go and hand me that damn rope!

So what they are saying is basically that they are only willing to make accusations, yet not back those accusations up with any evidence, not make the accusations up front to the accused, and then ignore traditional methods of any sensible organisation by refusing to hold any form of disciplinary hearing for all parties involved to air their grievances or attempt to defend against accusations.

Straight away, there are so many ropes available to hang them with, but just as a taster of what's to come, their alleged first decision:

"January 22: despite some questionable actions, Stephen was to be kept in the role of the Nominating Officer but should return control of party assets related to the website."

Whatever I was accused of that day without even finding out about it, apparently the CC decided that I should "return control of party assets relating to the website." Do the CC members even have the right to make such a decision by vote? Let's check the Constitution for the answer...

"6.6 The subject matter jurisdiction of the Constitutional Committee is limited to consideration of only those matters expressly identified as follows:

6.6.1 Recognition of affiliate organisations.

6.6.2 Selecting and Recognition of Nominating Officer.

6.6.3 Calling a SGM for termination of Party Leader.

6.6.4 Calling a SGM for termination of Deputy Leader.

6.6.5 Termination of officers.

6.6.6 Termination of members.

6.6.7 Termination of affiliate organisations or branches.

6.6.8 Termination of constitutional committee members."

Nope. I can't see anything about party assets in that list...

The irony of the ship called Liberty was that it was apparently attacked through either misidentification or miscommunication. Has the same thing happened here?

Thankfully we do have two ships. While one is tethered in it's own ropes with a captain that just drops anchors at every obstacle in his path, the other called Liberty has set sail and on it's way to a bright future in politics. Which one would you rather be on?
